A Brief History of the Pennsylvania State Regiment

The Original Regiment: The Pennsylvania State Regiment (PSR) was created in April 1777 by the merger of the Pennsylvania State Rifle Regiment and the Pennsylvania State Battalion of Musketry. These forerunners to the PSR participated in the defense of New York, the retreat through New Jersey, the crossing of the Delaware River, and the battles of Trenton and Princeton. Following the merger, the PSR was employed in the defense of Philadelphia, and the battles of Brandywine, Germantown, and Whitemarsh. On November 12, 1777, the PSR was formally re-designated the 13th Pennsylvania Regiment of the Continental Line. During the winter of 1777, the 13th took part in the encampment at Valley Forge. The last major engagement in which the 13th Pennsylvania Regiment fought as a separate regiment was at the Battle of Monmoth. After Monmouth, the regiment was absorbed by the 2nd Pennsylvania Regiment in July of 1778.

The Reconstructed Regiment: The Pennsylvania State Regiment of today is a recreated unit that portrays Pennsylvania soldiers of the Continental Line during the American Revolution. As members of the Olde Fort Mifflin Historical Society, volunteers of the PSR also adopt the persona of the Fort Mifflin garrison in 1777.

In addition, several members also research and portray commoners of the 18th Century, including gentlemen, merchants, craftswomen, farmers, etc. The PSR group is a family-friendly environment, and everyone is invited to take part in this unique experience.
